My Story

Candace Maria Dru, Columbia, SC native, proudly serves her community in many capacities. She takes pride in her titles: Holistic Lactation Consultant, Herbalist, and Midwife Apprentice. Her favorite title that two little people call her is Mommy. Her Children, Cruz and Ella-Céleste are her muses. Motherhood led her to birth work. Like many Black Women, Candace received poor treatment in the medical system, which led to a forced c-section with Cruz’s birth. Immediately she knew that she deserved better and committed herself to join the fight for equitable birth experiences for Black Women. Five years later, Ella-Céleste was born safely at home after a successful VBAC (vaginal birth after cesarean.)

Candace takes pride in being a lifelong learner. She currently apprentices with De la Flor Midwifery in Blythewood, SC, as the Senior Apprentice. Candace will be a licensed midwife in South Carolina in Spring 2024. In addition to her midwifery credentials Candace is also working on her Master of Science in Psychology with an Area of Study in Child and Adolescent Development.

Candace was formally educated in the public school systems of Columbia. She continued her education at Coastal Carolina University, where she obtained her Bachelor of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies, with a concentration in Health Management and Family Studies, in 2015. She is also a collector of certifications. Candace is a Certified Lactation Counselor, Phlebotomist, and South Carolina State Board Certified Nursing Assistant.

Support Candace on her midwifery journey by purchasing educational and clinical items on her Amazon wish list or with monetary donations.
